The Holy Spirit and the Mission of God

Pastor Chris Hansler

When the Spirit of God is hovering and God speaks, something great is about to happen!

Genesis 1:1-4

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:27-28

So God created human beings in his own image.
    In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

The reason God gives us His Holy Spirit is to empower us to accomplish the mission of God.

Acts 2:37-41

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

The shift in Acts 2 went from the Spirit hovering out there to the Spirit hovering in us.

The Spirit of God is hovering, God is speaking, and something great is about to happen!

Discussion Questions:

1. Do you feel the pull to say “yes” to Jesus today?

2. Are you tired? Do you need a fresh filling of God’s Spirit today?

3. Have you lost touch with your neighbors? Do you need to get back on the mission for which God has designed you?
