Why and How Should I Read the Bible?

I. THE BIBLE POINTS TO THE LIFE OF CHRIST
John 5:39-40 (CEB) "Examine the scriptures, since you think that in them you have eternal life. They also testify about me, yet you don’t want to come to me so that you can have life"

II. THE BIBLE POINTS TO THE LOVE OF CHRIST
JOHN 5:41-44 (CEB) “I don’t accept praise from people, but I know you, that you don’t have God’s love in you.  I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me. If others come in their own name, you receive them.  How can you believe when you receive praise from each other but don’t seek the praise that comes from the only God?"

III. THE BIBLE POINTS TO THE LAW OF CHRIST
JOHN 5:45-47 (CEB) “Don’t think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, the one in whom your hope rests. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, because Moses wrote about me. If you don’t believe the writings of Moses, how will you believe my words?”

 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. In what ways has engaging the scripture ultimately allowed you to grow in relationship with Jesus?
2. How has engaging God’s word allowed you to express Gods love?  Have there been times where your approach to God’s word didn’t culminate in God’s love?  If so, what needed to change?
3. Have you ever tried to earn God’s love through right behavior?  If so, what was the outcome?  What would it look like to accept God’s love as a gift?  What would those outcomes look like?
