Summary

Living out a Flourishing Life

Pastor Chris Hansler

John 10:7-11
“Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.’”

 Colossians 1:9-15
"We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation."

Kingdom = The place of God’s rule & reign

Jesus is the gate to the flourishing life – we get there through Him – everything else is a thief

Matthew 4:17
“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Matthew 5: 3-9  (Translation: Jonathan Pennington)
  1. Flourishing are the poor in spirit because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
  2. Flourishing are the mourners because they will be comforted.
  3. Flourishing are the humble because they will inherit the world.
  4. Flourishing are the ones hungering and thirsting for righteousness because they will be satisfied.
  5. Flourishing are the merciful because they will be given mercy.
  6. Flourishing are the pure in heart because they will see God.
  7. Flourishing are the peacemakers because they will be called the children of God.
  8. Flourishing are the ones persecuted on account of righteousness because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

1. God created you to flourish.

2. We flourish by following Jesus.

3. A flourishing life lives in the countercultural hope of God’s Kingdom ways.

Discussion Questions:

1. Are you following Jesus?

2. How might you need to reorient your understanding of happiness, blessing or flourishing to align with God’s perspective?

3. Is there anything you are holding onto that is keeping you from flourishing?
