Legacy and Living Between the Charcoal Fires

Pastor Brandon Berg

"A father carries pictures where his money used to be."

Steve Martin

“Having children is like living in a frat house. Nobody sleeps, everything's broken and there's a lot of throwing up.”

Ray Romano

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant, I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21. I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

Mark Twain

"There should be a children’s song: 'If You're Happy AND YOU KNOW IT, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF AND LET YOUR DAD SLEEP.'"

Jim Gaffigan

Definition of legacy: something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past

  • Jesus washing the disciple’s feet: John 13:15
  • Peter and Jesus round 1: John 18:18
  • Peter and Jesus round 2: John 21:9
  • Peter encouraging Christ followers via letter: 1 Peter 2:21

1 Peter 2:21-25

For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

Big Idea: Restoration and Legacy are found in tracing the Servant Jesus

Discussion Questions:

1. Have you ever found yourself stuck around the charcoal fire of regret or shame or bitterness? Describe the stuckness. Is it easy for you to relate to Peter “weeping bitterly” after denying Jesus?

2. Likewise, have you experienced the beauty of the charcoal fire of redemption, restoration, and renewal? What was this like? How did Jesus invite you/meet you in this time?

3. When you think about the idea of an enduring, ever-present invitation to the charcoal fire of redemption, restoration, and renewal, what is the first thought that comes to your mind? Is there anything you’d like to take a second and say to Jesus in response this?
