Fathom: Ecclesiology

Ephesians 3:16-19
And I ask him (Jesus) that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.
The church is a community only made possible by our individual connection to the vine that is Christ.
I. THE CHRIST CENTERED COMMUNITY PROMOTES UNITY
Romans 12:16
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
We are called to lay down our opinions and pick up God’s blessing, yet at times we choose to lay down God’s blessing so we can pick up our opinions.
II. THE CHRIST CENTERED COMMUNITY PURSUES PEACE
Romans 12:17-19
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord."
III. THE CHRIST CENTERED COMMUNITY PROPELS GRACE
Romans 12:20
On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
When I give God’s grace TO you, it can activate God’s grace IN you.
Grace given to another, can then become grace given from another.
John 17:20-21
My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.
Discussion Questions:
1. What are the differences in outcome that you have seen between people walking in division and people walking in unity?
2. How have you had to work at peace in your life? What was the result?
3. Are there ways you could respond to Jesus in propelling grace today? What will you need to do differently to see that happen?
