A Day to Pray

Pastor Aaron Sutherland

Matthew 6:5-9
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.  And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  “This, then, is how you should pray:

I. IN PRAYER WE DECLARE GOD’S PRAISE

Matthew 6:9
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name...

Spend the next few minutes offering to God your gratitude for the many blessings in your life, acknowledging God’s power and God’s holiness, and declaring God’s praise and promises.

II. IN PRAYER WE INVITE GOD’S POWER

Matthew 6:10
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Spend the next few minutes asking for the realities of heaven to become the realities on earth. Intercede for things such as freedom, safety, peace, supply, healing, direction, wisdom etc.

III. IN PRAYER WE TRUST GOD’S PROVISION

Matthew 6:11
Give us this day our daily bread...

Spend the next few minutes talking to God about your personal needs for provision.  Affirm your trust in God to take care of  you in every way, emotionally, relationally, physically, and spiritually.

IV. IN PRAYER WE EXPERIENCE GOD’S PURIFICATION

Matthew 6:12
...and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Spend the next few minutes addressing the forgiveness that you require from God and the forgiveness required between you and others.

V. IN PRAYER WE RELY ON GOD’S PROTECTION

Matthew 6:13
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Spend the next few minutes seeking God for direction, protection, and miraculous intervention.  Declare again your love and reliance on God for all things.  Seek God for personal and community deliverance.

Discussion Questions:

1. How is Jesus leading you to grow in relationship with Him this year?

2. What are some simple first steps you can take to see that growth take place?
