The Struggle is Real

by Tony Read on April 29, 2021

All throughout Lent this year, God put on my heart to spend my evenings with my wife in Scripture and prayer. We found ourselves at night sitting on the couch just scrolling through the phone, together but not together, and I really felt God speaking to me that this was not the way that I was supposed to lead my home.

And so in our Lent group, I mentioned that screen-free evenings are something I wanted to continue even after Lent is over, and felt like this is what God wanted my wife and me to do. Together in that process, we've grown closer and deeper into the relationship with Jesus.

Satan doesn't like that, Satan likes to create and stir up problems. We know this as spiritual warfare.

One evening, my wife and I read the following verse:

Ephesians 6:11-17 NIV

"Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,  and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

And we find this just so true. As we draw closer to Jesus and those attacks happen. This is real, and it happens in many ways. It happens when you're tired and when you're vulnerable.

Satan doesn't attack you in your strong places. He attacks you where you're weak.

In Ephesians 6 it says, "put on the full armor of God". In verse eleven, it says, "Put on every piece of God's armor". So when it tells you that two times, especially in the same chapter, you know it's pretty important. It's time to put on your armor. Every piece.
So I want to encourage you as you draw closer to Jesus to stand firm on His word. Put on the full armor of God. Draw close to Him, and when problems come, those times when you really are struggling, you will still have that peace that passes all understanding.

The struggle is real, but we have victory in Jesus.
