Pump the brakes

by Winston Arblaster on May 14, 2021

All too often, I go and do the thing that I shouldn't do. But I think I want it, so I do it anyway.

That's right. I go get Taco bell, in all its cheesy goodness.

Maybe you can relate to this... everyday sort of temptations to do something that you don't want to do or the temptation to not do something that you ought to do. Maybe you know deep down inside you what you should be doing but your flesh is screaming at you to not do it.

Here's one example of this: We're all are enslaved to our phones to a degree. So much so, in fact, that our bodies are just programmed to want it and to need it even if it doesn't bring us satisfaction. Have you ever picked up your phone just out of pure habit, and started scrolling social media, mindlessly moving your thumb and looking at the pictures? Suddenly, it's a few couple minutes later, you realize your body just picked up the phone without you thinking about it. That's your body taking control and then your spirit catches up. Your spirit is a little slower. It's a little quieter starts to catch up and says, "Hey! This isn't what you need right now!" A lot of times it's too late. We've already done that thing that we wish we hadn't done.

Paul says in Romans 7:15-20, "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.  As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it."

Sometimes when the Lord says, "Stop now and pray", I feel a check from the spirit of my heart to give over some of my day to Him and go back to the spiritual well that is the communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To go back to that thing that I was created to do, that we were all created to do... to worship. To return to that thing that we were made for, yet our flesh does not remember it. Our spirit is regenerated by the Holy Ghost. Our spirit does remember. And it's reminding us of what we need.

If we slow down and pump the brakes, it lets our spirit catch up and reminds us of what's good and who we were made to be.
