Prayer: Supplication

Pastor Brandon Berg, Gianna Flaming, and Gordon Schlosser

Acts 16:9-10 NIV
During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Supplication - “The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly.”

Philippians 4:4-7 (ESV)
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.  Let your reasonableness  be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 4:16
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Big Idea: Supplication is the antidote to anxiety.

When we don’t live with an anchor of faith, we will float in a sea of anxiety.

New definition of supplication: The act of approaching a loving God in humility, boldness, frankness, thankfulness and precision about our needs.

Big Idea: The act of approaching a loving God in humility, boldness, frankness, thankfulness and precision about our needs is the antidote to anxiety.

Discussion Questions:

1. Do you live with anxiety in your life? What are you most anxious about? How do you process your anxiety?

2. The Philippians were full of material possessions as well as anxiety. Have you ever felt this way- every material need met, yet a sense of anxiety still?

3. What thoughts does this idea of being precise with God about every area of your life stir in you?
